K-Beauty Ingredients: Snail Mucin, Cica & PHA Explained

Korean skincare made snail mucin, centella and PHA famous. Here is what each one does, who it suits, and what to pair it with.

Korean skincare didn't just popularise 10-step routines. It introduced a set of gentle, barrier-first ingredients that now show up everywhere. Here is what the three biggest ones really do.

Snail mucin

Snail secretion filtrate is a mix of glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid in tiny amounts. It hydrates, soothes and helps skin recover. Its bouncy texture makes it a good cushion under stronger actives.

Centella asiatica (cica)

You may know it as gotu kola or brahmi. Its active compounds (madecassoside and asiaticoside) calm redness and support repair. It is ideal the day after an exfoliation or retinoid night.

PHA (gluconolactone)

The gentlest chemical exfoliant. Its large molecules stay on the surface, so it smooths texture without the sting of glycolic acid, and it hydrates too. It is a good first acid for sensitive skin.

The K-beauty philosophy worth copying

Protect the barrier first, then add actives slowly. You don't need 10 steps. Cleanser, a hydrating layer, one targeted active, moisturiser and SPF covers 95% of what matters.
