Navratri Skincare Routine 2026: A 9-Night Plan for Garba Season
A simple morning and night routine for nine nights of garba: what to do before the first night, how to cleanse off sweat and makeup, and what to skip.
Sharad Navratri is expected to begin around 11 October this year (confirm the exact date in your panchang). For nine evenings, many of us will be dancing for hours, sweating under layers of makeup, getting home late and, with luck, still washing our face. That last part is where skin usually goes wrong.
This isn't a glow-in-nine-days promise. It's a plan to keep your skin steady while your routine is a mess. If you want the makeup side, we've covered that in Navratri makeup that survives garba.
Before the first night
- Don't start anything new now. A new retinol, acid or vitamin C the week of a festival is how people end up with red, flaking skin on Ashtami. Use what your skin already knows.
- Patch test new makeup. If you bought a foundation or glitter for the festival, test it behind your ear for a day first.
- Pause the strong exfoliation. Skip scrubs and peels from now. Sweat plus a freshly exfoliated face stings.
- Check your base products. Paste the foundation and primer lists into the pore-clog checker. If something sits high on the list and is flagged, save it for a one-off.
Morning, every day
- Gentle cleanser (or just water if your skin is dry and you cleansed well the night before).
- A light moisturiser. A gel texture is easier to wear under makeup and in the heat.
- Sunscreen. Navratri days are still bright, and you'll be outside for pujas and shopping. If you use makeup in the evening, this is also your base.
Night, after garba
This is the part that matters. Be honest about how tired you'll be, and keep it short enough that you'll do it.
- Take the makeup off first. A cleansing balm, oil or micellar water, with a cotton pad for the eyes. Waterproof makeup needs an oil-based remover, because a face wash alone just smears it. (If you're prone to fungal acne, read our guide to cleansing balms first.)
- Wash with a gentle cleanser. This removes the sweat and the remover residue. Don't scrub.
- Moisturise. Something light, with ceramides or glycerin.
- Pimple spot-treat only if you already use one. A tiny dot, not the whole face.
Too tired for all that? Do the first two steps and nothing else. Sleeping in makeup is the habit that causes most festival breakouts, and the moisturiser can wait one night.
Retinol and actives during Navratri
If you already use retinol and your skin is happy with it, you don't have to stop. Move it to the nights you aren't going out, and skip it the evening after a long late night. If you're not sure which of your actives can share a routine, tick them in our routine conflict checker.
If you're fasting
Many people fast, fully or partly, during Navratri. Skin often looks duller when you're drinking less. Keep water, coconut water or buttermilk going if your fast allows it, and don't treat skincare as a substitute for that. If you have a medical condition, follow your doctor's advice on fasting.
Day 5 to day 9: the mid-festival check
- New small bumps on the forehead, cheeks or jawline are more often from blocked pores and sweat than from "toxins". Cleanse properly and don't pick.
- If your skin stings when you apply moisturiser, stop all actives for a few days and keep to cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen.
- Itchy, uniform small bumps that don't change size can be fungal acne. Our fungal acne safe guide explains what to look for. See a dermatologist if it doesn't settle.
After Dussehra
Once the nights are over, go back to normal. Diwali is only a few weeks later, so it's a good time to follow a steady plan rather than start a new one. Our Diwali routine picks it up from here.
Quick answers
Can I use sunscreen at night for garba?
You don't need it after dark. Wear it in the morning and reapply if you're outdoors in daylight.
Should I do a facial before Navratri?
Only if you've had one before and know your skin tolerates it, and do it at least a week ahead so any redness settles.
Can I wear glitter on my face?
Use cosmetic-grade glitter made for the face, never craft glitter, and keep it away from the eyes. Remove it with oil or balm before washing.
