Can you use Mandelic Acid with Tretinoin?

Use with caution

Yes, but not at the same time.

Both Mandelic Acid and Tretinoin speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead.

How to use them

Alternate nights, for example Mandelic Acid on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Tretinoin on Tuesday and Thursday, with a plain moisturiser night in between if your skin feels sensitive. If your skin is resilient and already used to both, you can try layering them: apply Mandelic Acid first, wait a few minutes, then apply Tretinoin.

What Mandelic Acid does

The largest, slowest AHA. Dermatologists often pick it for melanin-rich Indian skin tones because it treats acne and pigmentation with a lower risk of post-inflammatory darkening.

What Tretinoin does

The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Mandelic Acid and Tretinoin together?

Yes, but not at the same time. Both Mandelic Acid and Tretinoin speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead.

Which goes first, Mandelic Acid or Tretinoin?

Apply Mandelic Acid first, then Tretinoin. The general rule is thinnest to thickest texture, and lowest pH first. For this pair, though, it is better not to layer them in the same routine at all.

Should I use Mandelic Acid in the morning or at night?

Mandelic Acid: best at night. Use 3–4 nights a week. It is mild enough that many people can use it more often than other acids.

Should I use Tretinoin in the morning or at night?

Tretinoin: best at night. Use only as prescribed: a pea-sized amount on completely dry skin at night, starting 2–3 nights a week. Expect dryness and a possible purge for 4–8 weeks. Daily SPF is essential.

Is Mandelic Acid with Tretinoin safe during pregnancy?

Tretinoin is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor about safer alternatives such as azelaic acid or bakuchiol.
