The verdict

For pigmentation, Retinol is the stronger option, while Kojic Acid is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.

Using both? Safe to mix There is no known chemical conflict between Kojic Acid and Retinol, and neither makes the other less effective. They share a goal (pigmentation), so together they reinforce each other. How to layer them →

Kojic Acid in short

Derived from fungi used in rice wine and soy sauce production, kojic acid blocks the enzyme that makes melanin. It is effective on dark spots but can cause contact sensitivity in some people.

Retinol in short

The most studied over-the-counter anti-ageing active. Retinol speeds up cell turnover, softens fine lines, fades marks and keeps pores clear, but it can cause dryness, peeling and sun sensitivity while your skin adjusts.
