The verdict

For pigmentation, Tretinoin is the stronger option, while Kojic Acid is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.

Using both? Safe to mix There is no known chemical conflict between Kojic Acid and Tretinoin, and neither makes the other less effective. They share a goal (pigmentation), so together they reinforce each other. How to layer them →

Kojic Acid in short

Derived from fungi used in rice wine and soy sauce production, kojic acid blocks the enzyme that makes melanin. It is effective on dark spots but can cause contact sensitivity in some people.

Tretinoin in short

The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.
