The verdict

For texture, dullness and hydration, Lactic Acid is the stronger option, while PHA is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.

Using both? Use with caution Lactic Acid and PHA are both exfoliating acids. Layered together they can over-exfoliate, which shows up as stinging, shiny tight skin and breakouts. Pre-formulated blends are fine. Otherwise, use them on different nights. How to layer them →

Lactic Acid in short

A gentler AHA with a larger molecule. It exfoliates while also acting as a humectant, so it suits dry and sensitive skin that cannot tolerate glycolic acid.

PHA in short

Polyhydroxy acids are the gentlest chemical exfoliants. They work only on the surface, hydrate at the same time, and are usually tolerated by sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.
