The verdict
For texture, Salicylic Acid is the stronger option, while Lactic Acid is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Use with caution Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid are both exfoliating acids. Layered together they can over-exfoliate, which shows up as stinging, shiny tight skin and breakouts. Pre-formulated blends are fine. Otherwise, use them on different nights. How to layer them →
Lactic Acid in short
A gentler AHA with a larger molecule. It exfoliates while also acting as a humectant, so it suits dry and sensitive skin that cannot tolerate glycolic acid.
Salicylic Acid in short
An oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid that gets inside pores to dissolve the sebum and dead skin behind blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts. It is the go-to for oily, acne-prone skin.
