The verdict

Both are similarly gentle. Choose based on your main goal: Retinal for aging, acne, texture and pigmentation, Salicylic Acid for acne, oil control and texture.

Using both? Use with caution Both Retinal and Salicylic Acid speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead. How to layer them →

Retinal in short

Retinaldehyde is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol, so it works faster than retinol while usually being gentler than tretinoin. It also has a mild antibacterial effect useful for acne.

Salicylic Acid in short

An oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid that gets inside pores to dissolve the sebum and dead skin behind blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts. It is the go-to for oily, acne-prone skin.
