The verdict
For acne, Retinal is the stronger option, while Sulfur is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Use with caution Sulfur and retinoids are both drying. Layered together they often cause flaking and irritation. Use sulfur as a morning spot treatment or wash, and the retinoid at night. How to layer them →
Retinal in short
Retinaldehyde is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol, so it works faster than retinol while usually being gentler than tretinoin. It also has a mild antibacterial effect useful for acne.
Sulfur in short
An old-school acne fighter that dries out oily spots, gently exfoliates and has antibacterial and antifungal activity. It is gentler than benzoyl peroxide for many people, though it has a distinctive smell.
