Can you use Lactic Acid with Vitamin C?

Use with caution

Yes, but not at the same time.

Pure vitamin C is already acidic. Layering Lactic Acid on top lowers the pH further and raises the risk of stinging and irritation. Use vitamin C in the morning and Lactic Acid at night.

How to use them

Split them up: use Vitamin C in your morning routine (under sunscreen) and Lactic Acid at night.

What Lactic Acid does

A gentler AHA with a larger molecule. It exfoliates while also acting as a humectant, so it suits dry and sensitive skin that cannot tolerate glycolic acid.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Lactic Acid and Vitamin C together?

Yes, but not at the same time. Pure vitamin C is already acidic. Layering Lactic Acid on top lowers the pH further and raises the risk of stinging and irritation. Use vitamin C in the morning and Lactic Acid at night.

Which goes first, Lactic Acid or Vitamin C?

Apply Vitamin C first, then Lactic Acid. The general rule is thinnest to thickest texture, and lowest pH first. For this pair, though, it is better not to layer them in the same routine at all.

Should I use Lactic Acid in the morning or at night?

Lactic Acid: best at night. Use 2–3 nights a week. It is good for beginners to exfoliation. Follow with a moisturiser, and wear SPF the next day.

Should I use Vitamin C in the morning or at night?

Vitamin C: best in the morning. Apply in the morning on clean skin before moisturiser and sunscreen. Store it away from light and heat, and throw it out once it turns dark orange.
