The verdict
For acne, Tretinoin is the stronger option, while Benzoyl Peroxide is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Don't mix Benzoyl peroxide oxidises and inactivates tretinoin when they are applied together. Most dermatologists prescribe benzoyl peroxide in the morning and tretinoin at night. (Some newer micro-encapsulated tretinoin gels are stable with it, so check with your doctor.) How to layer them →
Benzoyl Peroxide in short
It kills acne-causing bacteria (C. acnes) by releasing oxygen into the pore. It works fast on inflamed pimples, but it is drying and can bleach towels and pillowcases.
Tretinoin in short
The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.
