The verdict
For texture, pigmentation and aging, Tretinoin is the stronger option, while Glycolic Acid is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Use with caution Both Glycolic Acid and Tretinoin speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead. How to layer them →
Glycolic Acid in short
The smallest alpha-hydroxy acid, so it penetrates deepest. It dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells for smoother, brighter skin and fades marks, but it is the AHA most likely to sting.
Tretinoin in short
The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.
