The verdict

For pigmentation, Tretinoin is the stronger option, while Hydroquinone is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.

Using both? Safe to mix This is the backbone of the dermatologist "triple combination" (Kligman) formula for melasma. Tretinoin helps hydroquinone penetrate. It is effective but irritating, so use it only under medical supervision. How to layer them →

Hydroquinone in short

The strongest topical depigmenting agent, used for melasma and stubborn dark spots. It blocks melanin production, but it must be used in short, supervised courses: long-term use can cause irritation and, rarely, ochronosis (blue-black darkening).

Tretinoin in short

The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.
