The verdict
For texture, Tretinoin is the stronger option, while PHA is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Use with caution Both PHA and Tretinoin speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead. How to layer them →
PHA in short
Polyhydroxy acids are the gentlest chemical exfoliants. They work only on the surface, hydrate at the same time, and are usually tolerated by sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.
Tretinoin in short
The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.
