The verdict
For aging, acne, texture and pigmentation, Tretinoin is the stronger option, while Retinal is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Don't mix Retinal and Tretinoin are both retinoids. Doubling up does not double results. It just doubles the dryness, peeling and irritation. Pick one. How to layer them →
Retinal in short
Retinaldehyde is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol, so it works faster than retinol while usually being gentler than tretinoin. It also has a mild antibacterial effect useful for acne.
Tretinoin in short
The prescription-strength retinoid, and the gold standard for acne and photo-ageing, with decades of evidence. It works directly (no conversion needed), so it is stronger and more irritating than retinol or retinal.
