The verdict
For texture, Retinal is the stronger option, while Urea is gentler and better suited to sensitive or beginner skin.
Using both? Great combo Urea cushions Retinal: it hydrates and supports the barrier while the active does its work. That means less irritation and better results. How to layer them →
Retinal in short
Retinaldehyde is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol, so it works faster than retinol while usually being gentler than tretinoin. It also has a mild antibacterial effect useful for acne.
Urea in short
A natural moisturising factor that pulls water into skin. At 10% and above it also softens rough, flaky patches. It is excellent for very dry skin, keratosis pilaris and cracked heels.
