What Glutathione does

A popular "glow" antioxidant in India. Topically it has some evidence for mild brightening, but it is a large, unstable molecule. Expect modest results compared with vitamin C, arbutin or niacinamide.

What Retinal does

Retinaldehyde is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol, so it works faster than retinol while usually being gentler than tretinoin. It also has a mild antibacterial effect useful for acne.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Glutathione and Retinal together?

Yes, it is safe. There is no known chemical conflict between Glutathione and Retinal, and neither makes the other less effective. They share a goal (pigmentation), so together they reinforce each other.

Which goes first, Glutathione or Retinal?

Apply Glutathione first, then Retinal. The general rule is thinnest to thickest texture, and lowest pH first.

Should I use Glutathione in the morning or at night?

Glutathione: works morning or night. Use daily as part of a brightening routine, always with sunscreen. Glutathione injections and drips for skin whitening are not approved for that use and carry real risks.

Should I use Retinal in the morning or at night?

Retinal: best at night. Start at 0.05% two or three nights a week and build up slowly. Buffer with moisturiser if you are sensitive, and wear SPF daily.

Is Glutathione with Retinal safe during pregnancy?

Retinal is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor about safer alternatives such as azelaic acid or bakuchiol.
