Can you use Adapalene with Glycolic Acid?

Use with caution

Yes, but not at the same time.

Both Adapalene and Glycolic Acid speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead.

How to use them

Alternate nights, for example Adapalene on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Glycolic Acid on Tuesday and Thursday, with a plain moisturiser night in between if your skin feels sensitive. If your skin is resilient and already used to both, you can try layering them: apply Glycolic Acid first, wait a few minutes, then apply Adapalene.

What Adapalene does

A synthetic retinoid built for acne. It unclogs pores and calms the inflammation behind breakouts. It is more stable than retinol, and in India it is sold as a gel (often by prescription).

What Glycolic Acid does

The smallest alpha-hydroxy acid, so it penetrates deepest. It dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells for smoother, brighter skin and fades marks, but it is the AHA most likely to sting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Adapalene and Glycolic Acid together?

Yes, but not at the same time. Both Adapalene and Glycolic Acid speed up cell turnover. Used in the same routine they commonly cause redness, peeling and a damaged barrier, especially in India's heat and humidity. Alternate nights instead.

Which goes first, Adapalene or Glycolic Acid?

Apply Glycolic Acid first, then Adapalene. The general rule is thinnest to thickest texture, and lowest pH first. For this pair, though, it is better not to layer them in the same routine at all.

Should I use Adapalene in the morning or at night?

Adapalene: best at night. Apply a thin layer to the whole acne-prone area at night, not just on spots. Expect a purge for 4–6 weeks. Use a moisturiser and daily SPF.

Should I use Glycolic Acid in the morning or at night?

Glycolic Acid: best at night. Use 2–3 nights a week after cleansing. Skip it on nights you use retinoids. Sunscreen is non-negotiable because AHAs raise sun sensitivity.

Is Adapalene with Glycolic Acid safe during pregnancy?

Adapalene is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor about safer alternatives such as azelaic acid or bakuchiol.
