Can you use Exosomes with Retinol?

Use with caution

Yes, but not at the same time.

Retinol increases cell turnover and can be irritating on its own. If you are using exosomes for in-clinic post-procedure recovery (e.g. after microneedling), pause retinol until your skin has fully healed, and check with your practitioner.

How to use them

Alternate nights, for example Exosomes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Retinol on Tuesday and Thursday, with a plain moisturiser night in between if your skin feels sensitive. If your skin is resilient and already used to both, you can try layering them: apply Exosomes first, wait a few minutes, then apply Retinol.

What Exosomes does

Tiny cell-signalling particles, most often derived from plant or stem-cell cultures for cosmetic use. In-clinic exosome treatments (injected or applied after microneedling) have more published evidence than the topical serums sold direct to consumers. Regulatory status varies by country, and topical evidence is still described as early and limited, so treat "regeneration" or anti-ageing claims with caution.

What Retinol does

The most studied over-the-counter anti-ageing active. Retinol speeds up cell turnover, softens fine lines, fades marks and keeps pores clear, but it can cause dryness, peeling and sun sensitivity while your skin adjusts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Exosomes and Retinol together?

Yes, but not at the same time. Retinol increases cell turnover and can be irritating on its own. If you are using exosomes for in-clinic post-procedure recovery (e.g. after microneedling), pause retinol until your skin has fully healed, and check with your practitioner.

Which goes first, Exosomes or Retinol?

Apply Exosomes first, then Retinol. The general rule is thinnest to thickest texture, and lowest pH first. For this pair, though, it is better not to layer them in the same routine at all.

Should I use Exosomes in the morning or at night?

Exosomes: works morning or night. If using a topical exosome serum, apply after cleansing and before heavier creams. For in-clinic exosome treatments, use only a qualified, licensed practitioner and ask what the exosomes are derived from.

Should I use Retinol in the morning or at night?

Retinol: best at night. Start 2–3 nights a week on dry skin, a pea-sized amount for the whole face, then build up. Always wear sunscreen the next morning.

Is Exosomes with Retinol safe during pregnancy?

Retinol is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor about safer alternatives such as azelaic acid or bakuchiol.
